PRESENTS THE 16th ANNUAL

Old Louisville Hidden Treasures Garden Tour

Saturday July 11th & Sunday July 12th, 2009  10 am - 5 pm

During the second weekend in July each year, Louisville offers glimpses into one of its best-kept secrets. The Old Louisville Hidden Treasures Garden Tour welcomes garden lovers into the private green spaces of the nation’s largest Victorian residential neighborhood. The tinkling of water in fountains and ponds beguiles the visitor into disregarding summer heat while enjoying birdsong and blossoms during leisurely visits to a variety of unique urban gardens.

Old Louisville gardeners share the experience of their personal retreats with hundreds of visitors. Tucked behind imposing Victorian homes and carriage houses and protected by vine-covered walls and privacy fences, these summertime extensions of domestic space surprise and charm guests who stroll down tree-shaded streets reminiscent of a slower-paced era.

This tour is designed to be walked so that the visitor can experience the scale of Old Louisville residences and the peacefulness of its gardens. Because the neighborhood is large, each year the tour rotates to a different section that yields up its unexpectedly bucolic secrets to those who take a peek.

2008 Garden Tour tickets are $12 on the days of the tour or $10 in advance if purchased before Friday, July 11 at 5 pm.

From June 1 through July 10, tickets are also available at the Old Louisville Information Center in Central Park. Phone 502-635-5244, or email OLNC@bellsouth.net. Tickets purchased in advance or on site should be picked up at the sales table during tour hours. Tickets are good for both days of the tour. There are no rain dates or refunds.

The tour begins at the sales table in front of the Conrad-Caldwell House Museum, 1402 St. James Court at Magnolia Ave. You will receive a garden tour map printed on a fan and a garden description brochure. Be sure to sign up for a drawing for 2 free tickets for the 2009 garden tour. Complimentary refreshments are available in the Hospitality Center located in Haskins Hall, adjacent to the Conrad-Caldwell House, where you will also have an opportunity to place your bids at our silent auction.

For our out-of-town visitors staying in Louisville’s center city and not wishing to drive, the sales table is only 8 blocks south of Fourth & Broadway and can be reached by walking or on TARC bus #4. Get off at Magnolia Ave. and walk a short half-block west to the sales table. Call TARC at (502) 585-1234 for schedules.

With the support of the Second Street Neighborhood Association, the Hidden Treasures Garden Tour benefits the entire Old Louisville community. Individual garden owners’ talents, effort and dedication to fine landscaping contribute to the quality of life for all in the neighborhood. Their gardens display urban landscapes that help to reduce air and noise pollution and decrease the effects of summer temperatures. Their gardens complement the aesthetics of the fine architecture and inspire other residents and business owners to create further green spaces. Proceeds from the Garden Tour will help improve and preserve this part of Louisville Metro’s heritage.

Thank you to all of our sponsors and volunteers!
